Style Frames
Concept
A whimsical journey: The Scissors of Fate and the Clock of Time fall in love but the world conspires against them.
Based on
The Starless Sea by Erin Morningstar is full of short fables in the Sweet Sorrows sections of the book. This passage in the book creates beautiful metaphors and mystical lore. It pulls you in and makes you understand the importance of storytelling. The metaphors provoke intriguing visuals perfect for a sequence to supplement the story. Time and Fate are eternal forces that have gravity on the world, their love fable is one for the ages.
Thumbnail Process
When beginning the process for this project, I knew I wanted to focus on creating the best frames I could. This requires lots of ideas and revisions. To start I split the script into each line based on the rhythm of the story, and wrote them in my sketchbook row by row. For each line I created at minimum, 4 thumbnails, and even more until I was happy I had reached a good idea. I then went back and put together my storyboard using the best idea from each row. Doing this chronologically allowed me to keep transitions in mind and find the visual language for the story.
Style Exploration
Similarly to the thumbnails, I decided to explore quite the variation of styles. Ranging from solid vectors with little to no detail to fully composited textures with lots of detail. Deciding on a heavily textured look stems from the story being from a book about the importance of keeping stories alive, and archived.
